CEMETERIES and CREMATORIUMS
 

CANTERBURY, HERNE BAY and WHITSTABLE
Until the UK's local government reorganisation in the 1970s Canterbury, Herne Bay and Whitstable's town councils each had a burial committee to manage their own burial ground. The records of these burial committees, along with other records from Herne Bay and Whitstable Town Council's past, are now held by Canterbury City Council.

Canterbury City Council's Bereavement Unit now administers the three local authority cemeteries centrally: Cemeteries Registrar, Canterbury City Council,

Once managed by Faversham Town Council the Cemetery is now administered by:

JEWISH CEMETERY (opened 1760) - the cemetery was in a state of decline when in 2000 lottery funding enabled it to be tidied. It is now in the care of Canterbury City Council.

Notable Burial: Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) - (
Józef Teodor Konrad Nalecz Korzeniowski) born in Berdyczew, Poland (now Ukraine) Was well travelled due to a career in the Merchant Navy. He later became an author whose early novels included Lord Jim (1900). He lived at 'Oswald' Bishopsbourne for 5 years before his death.
